Dr. Jody Stanislaw - NMD, CDE
Carb Counting alone is not enough!
with Dr. Jody Stanislaw -  NMD, CDE
I recommended that a healthy diet should consist of at least 80 percent healthy, whole foods, which allows for occasional favored treats 20 percent or less of the time. Because this talk is shared with the masses, and frankly the average diet today is more like 80 percent processed and maybe 20 percent healthy, I proposed the 80/20 ratio because it’s a more realistic goal for most people to achieve.

Parenting Teens with T1D
with Ilana Bergen
Who says that two is better than 1? Well, when her second child was diagnosed with T1, she heard everything in the book, at least you know what you are doing, and at glad it's not cancer! But does any of that matter if you don't stop and take a moment to process? Listen to Ilana discuss the reality of parenting two t1 teens for the past 12 years day in and day out and talk about the real stuff, like 'what happens after dark' and answer truthful hard questions like 'do you ever want to cry' and share her story about how it's not always sprinkles and rainbows... because that is what your family and friends want to hear. The truth is, it tough, and it's okay to talk about it. It doesn't always get easier, but you get used to your new normal.

Garrit Pille
My T1D is never going to hold me back again, and don't let it hold you back either!
with Garrit Pillie, Adventurer and Engineer
When I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, I was in my early 20s. At first, I refused to accept I would need to use insulin. I tried running miles every day and avoiding carbs entirely to manage. My levels were still way too high, and I was a downright skeleton. My boss ended up taking me on a tour of a kidney treatment dialysis center and mentioned that this could be my future if I don’t face reality. What a wake-up call. I then discovered the Omnipod system and that has been a huge help in managing my levels when I’m having a blast doing everything I want to do such as downhill mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding. I was also honored and humbled to recently reach third degree level black belt in Iaido after training for nearly 10 years. Life is good!
ABOUT GARRIT PILLIE
Garrit is a Director of Engineering in commercial real estate. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Washington, where he graduated cum laude. He juggled working towards his degree while also advancing in his career as a building engineer, flipping houses, and managing his diabetes. They enjoy many adventures living aboard their boat, which allows them to explore the jewels of the Pacific Northwest, including the San Juan and Gulf Islands.

Dr. Timothy J. Kieffer- PHD
The future of Stem Cell research and T1D
with Dr. Timothy J. Kieffer-  PHD's research team presenting on his behalf
Restoration of insulin independence and normoglycemia has been the overarching goal in diabetes research and therapy. While whole-organ and islet transplantation have become gold-standard procedures in achieving glucose control in diabetic patients, the profound lack of suitable donor tissues severely hampers the broad application of these therapies. Here, we describe current efforts aimed at generating a sustainable source of functional human stem cell-derived insulin-producing islet cells for cell transplantation and present
state-of-the-art efforts to protect such cells via immune modulation and encapsulation strategies.

ABOUT TIMOTHY J. KIEFFER
Dr. Kieffer’s laboratory is focused on the development of novel gene and cell therapy approaches to treat diabetes. He has co-authored >175 peer reviewed publications and given >100 invited presentations. He has mentored >40 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in addition to numerous undergraduates and is an active teacher. He has received scholarships from the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA), the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, and JDRF and his research has been supported by these agencies, in addition to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Stem Cell Network. In 2010 he received the CDA Young Scientist Award and in 2018 was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2016/17 he spent 1 year on sabbatical at The Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University.
